Description

Price

Because of the high cost of early mint classic stamps some collectors pick a certain Scott number and collect used prior to that number.  If you collect any used U.S. be sure to request our U.S. used classic price list.  Over 3,800 used lots are available for your selection.  Many have very light cancels.

Specimens

Specimens are issued stamps overprinted with the word specimen or some other word to make them invalid for postage.  They are provided to the Universal Postal Union , for publicity, and governmental officials.

Many early U.S. classics have very small margins.  This was caused by inexperience in making stamps, uneven paper shrinkage, and equipment that was still in experimental stages of development.  Average to fine centering is a majority of stamps.  Well centered, mint never hinged,  early U.S. stamps often sell for several times  current catalog values.

Grading Classic Imperforate Issues

XF ---- 4 Margins well clear of the frame lines

or design.

VF ---- 4 Margins clear with one or two very

close but not touching.

F/VF - 3 Margins clear while touching on the

fourth margin..

FINE - 2-3 Margins slightly cutting on one or

two frame lines or design.

AVE -- Design is cut into on one or more sides.

Many collectors in the 1800's soaked the gum off their stamps to make safer preservation.
