INFORMATION

Please note that each stamp is identified first by a lot number and then the Scott number.  The lot number identifies the exact stamp in our inventory.  When ordering please use both our LOT # and the Scott #.

Many lots are one of a kind.  Some lots will have several copies of the same stamp and condition. Others will have only one.  Please look over the INVENTORY UPDATE for lots no longer available.  We realize it will take you a little longer to check the INVENTORY UPDATE, but find that with its use you will not be ordering stamps or covers that have been sold.

Occasionally unused United States stamps will be included in this price list. Whenever unused stamps are included the word MINT in capital letters will be printed.  MINT does not mean never hinged.  If you collect unused U.S. stamps please request our mint U.S. price list.  It is free to active collectors.  Visit our web site for an up-to-date inventory  or request a paper copy or an email/fax copy.

World’s First Postage Stamp 1840

Stamp collecting was born in Great Britain on May 6, 1840 when Sir Rowland Hill instituted the prepayment of postage with the world’s first adhesive postage stamp called the “Penny Black.”  Approximately 60,000,000 were issued which has allowed any collector to own their own world number one.  Scott’s 2011 retail used off cover VF price is $260.00.

Proofs

Most proofs are identical to the issued stamp although some proofs are in different colors.  This is the last stage in the selection of design and color of the stamp to be issued.  Quantities are usually under 3,000.  All are MINT.  Although we list a few in this catalog most are listed in our mint catalog.

On July 1, 1847, Postmasters’ Provisionals became illegal and the general issues we know as Scott’s #1 & #2 became valid.  The earliest known use of #1 was July 7 and #2 was July 2, 1847.  The first use of an adhesive postage stamp was the famous Penny Black, May 6, 1840, from Great Britain.  John N. Luff Lists 3,712,000 U.S. #1’s being distributed and 891,000 of #2.
