In 1857 the United States began using a British invention that made separating stamps easier.

It was called a perforator.

The price of a stamp is determined by the number of that stamp remaining in the hands of collectors and investors, condition, and demand.  Scott number #293 had approximately 31,200 returned and destroyed.  That left only 25,000 stamps actually sold.

Many early U.S. classics have very small margins.  This was caused by inexperience in making stamps, uneven paper shrinkage, and equipment that was still in experimental stages of development.  Therefore, average to fine centering is collected by many collectors.  Well centered early U.S. stamps sell for two to five times current catalog values.

In 1861 all U.S. stamps in use were declared no longer valid for postage so that the Confederate States would not have their use.  Therefore, although you could still use a mint #63 for postage you would be violating federal law to use a mint #39.
